Due to its location on the Elbe river with access to the sea, Hamburg is and has been an international connection point for global trade. The city looks back on an interesting and long history of intercultural connections and commerce. It is the home for many open-minded people from different nations, and houses several embassies alongside countless trading companies. But did you know that Hamburg is referred to as the Gateway to the World? It also happens to be my brithplace and where I finished my bilingual studies as a trainee in wholesale and foreign trade!
Personally, I'm happy I was born in this city as it truly was a gateway to the rest of the world for me! My first flights to the United States departed from Hamburg Airport (before prices in other airports became competitive). I can't even count the number of international people that I have shown around Hamburg — and it's always a pleasure to do so.
Fun Fact: When Friends from the US visited me in Kaiserslautern earlier this year (2019), we drove 600 km to Hamburg as part of their vacation! I wanted to show them the city and friends I made, but also my family and where I grew up.
